There probably isn’t any two DJs more excited about the return of DSD than these two. Our residential wonders of a pair of DJs who keep us spinning, grinning and loving it all summer. So we caught up with Mister Barker and Queen Josephine for a pre-season quickie to talk things magnificent, whipper-snapping and cheeky.
So here we go again. Another summer, another season of DSD. What are you looking forward to this year?
Chris: Getting up close and personal with QJ and her magnificent rack, shimmering sunsets on the new improved terrace and spinning lots of amazing tunes of course!
Queenie: Well apart from wiggling my magnificent rack (thank you Chris) I’m looking forward to a perfect sunset every week. I’m really pleased we’re going weekly again for the 2014 season after last year’s fortnightly parties. This time round the fabulous DSD crowd will know exactly where we’ll be from 8pm every Friday!
What kind of music can we expect from your DSD sets this year?
Chris: Basslines! We try not to be too bound by styles or a music but Disco, Nu Disco and Deep House are firm favourites
Queenie: Agreed! House that’s either deep and mysterious, pretty and sexy or just plain disco rude! I am quite a saucy old Queen, so I generally try to slip a little bit of naughtiness whatever time I play. Listen carefully……
You both seem equally at home warming up at sunset or getting down and dirty come early morning. What’s the secret?
Queenie: I can’t speak for that young whippersnapper Mister Barker, but I reckon I’m happy doing any set time because at my vast age means I’m able to see the benefits of each. Testing out new bits of beauty during the warm up, feeling the love of the packed dancefloor later on. Love it all!!!
Chris: Queenie’s right. I think it’s about not being afraid to give people something different and mixing up with a few DSD classics that everyone loves.
Why do you think you compliment each other so brilliantly on (and off) the decks?
Chris: Queenie and I have a love for so many similar things – whether it be house music with filthy base lines or absurd and eccentric euro trash – we’re little mirrorball-like peas in a pod!
Queenie: I love Chris when he’s disco, I love him when he’s deep, I love him when he’s dirty but most of all I love it when he grabs my boobs for the camera – a frequent event at DSD! And apart from my lovely missus, he’s the only person I know who has an un-hidden liking for Teach In’s Ding-A-Dong (Eurovision winners in 1975).
DSD Higher is looking like delivering some amazing parties on the roof terrace this summer – what are you looking forward to?
Chris: More Disco dancing and more sunsets – all up in the air!
Queenie: The roof terrace at Club Revenge is a great space and has a beautiful view of the pier – and there’s something really special about playing music outdoors with a sea view! It feels a bit naughty which, of course, is right up my street……
If you could give each other a new made-up award what would it be?
Chris: Without question: Sauciest Strumpet
Queenie: I reckon Chris would win Least Irritating Boob Grabber Of The Year plus the Best DJ because he’s marvellous, a great DJ and I just love going back to back with him (tee hee).
This will be the fifth season of DSD. What do you think makes it so fabulous?
Chris: The whole thing’s been put together with people with passion and that’s what resonates.
Queenie: Indeed. Also we’d be nowhere with out the crowd – so attitude free, willing to dance to either brand new or more familiar tunes and always friendly and kind to this lil’ old resident!!! I’m so glad the wonderful AJ decided to start DSD and I can’t thank him enough for still wanting my services!!!!!
If there’s one tune that encompasses everything about your fellow resident DJ what would it be and why?
Queenie: Shimma’s Heartache really reminds me of Chris – it’s one of those sexy, pumping-bass-line-with-a-gorgeous-vocal tunes that you simply have to dance to. I absolutely love it, just like I love him ha-ha (pass the sick bucket). That aside, any tune by Sybil also makes me think of Chris. They’re all fantastic, plus I love the way he says ‘Sybil’!!!
Chris: Veitengruber’s Junk for sure. “Whatcha gonna do with all that junk!”… it’s cheeky, just like her!
Dirty or disco?
Chris: Disco – those outfits, those full orchestras – can’t be beat
Queenie: It changes every day. Today it’s DIRTY!
Sunrise or sunset?
Chris: Gotta be sunset
Queenie: Sunset for me too, I like the gradual onset of darkness as the beats start to get darker too…..
