DSD Pride Quickie with Queen Josephine

When Brighton and Hove Pride is just round the corner, one DSD Quickie just won’t do. We want lots. So this week expect plenty of quickie action as we catch up with all of our Pride weekend  DJs and a certain sauce pot. First up is the queen of DSD, the ever glorious, occasionally camp but always Dirty Sunset Disco, Queen Josephine.

So Brighton Pride is almost here – what besides DSD are you looking forward to most and why? Well then….what am I not looking forward to (apart from how I feel the Monday after)? Djing in the Women’s Dance tent on Saturday is going to be fabulous, and I’m dead chuffed to be playing at Audio for Warehouse Pride Takeover and the legendary Sunday Sundae. Plus there’s going to be a cheeky little session at Neighbourhood on Sunday afternoon too. I’m such a lucky old Queen!

Having graced our proud decks last year what for you makes DSD Pride parties so special? DSD is always special, but Pride definitely takes that ‘specialness’ up a notch. The wonderful housey carnival vibe hits new heights with a sea of happy DSDers all bouncing around in proud unison.

Can we expect any Pride exclusives – new tunes / productions / a particularly special outfit? Whilst I’d love to say that I’ll be wearing a crown and clutching a scepter and orb I’m afraid my outfits will be mostly a series of different vests and shorts (it’s difficult to wear anything pointy on your bonce whilst also modelling headphones though I will hopefully get to clutch Kate’s orbs occasionally).

What do you remember about your first ever Pride? A ball-gown (black taffeta), a hostess trolley with a dodgy back wheel and a row on the way home!

Keeping with the Brighton & Hove theme who is your LGBT icon? And why? Sooooooo difficult. My head says Madonna but my heart says Donna Summer. So Donna it is…. for the magnificence of the best record of all time ‘I Feel Love’.

Obviously we love to party at Pride but beside the glorious BPMs that accompany the weekend what is it about Pride celebrations that are important to you? The very fact that we CAN have our wonderful celebration is all down to the previous generations of LGBT brave souls who fought so hard for us to gain acceptance. We must never forget their role in allowing us to get to this stage.

Mr Putin has a problem with our LGBT brothers and sisters in Russia – what message would you send to him this Brighton Pride weekend? I would like to tell him that he is a disgrace to humankind and that there is no place on this earth for his antiquated attitude towards the Russian LGBT population. Then I would lock onto his coordinates and beam him down to the middle of Preston Park on Saturday afternoon. That’d learn him.

Ultimate Pride tune. Lots and lots! Though ‘Let The Sunshine In’ by Solarys is a good place to start!

And finally the queues at the bars over Pride are not easy to deal with when you’re DJing so yours is a ? Lager please – not one of those strong ones though. Unless I’m saying this to you on Sunday night in which case I’ll have whatever you like as long as it isn’t a Jager Bomb. Thanks”.
